International Day of Peace Workshop
Children will celebrate the International Day of Peace by learning about symbols of peace like the dove of peace, the peace crane and the iconic peace symbol as they create art projects inspired by those symbols.

A. October 2 - World Smile Day Homemade Cards - Children will create homemade cards; some to keep, some we will deliver to a local nursing home for World Smile Day (October 7).
B. November 6 - Veteran's Day Gift Making - Children will make gifts for local veterans for Veteran's Day as well as create something patriotic to take home.
C. December 4 - Mitten Tree Day - Children will create their own decorative mitten ornaments and for each child enrolled, the Art Center will donate a pair of mittens to People to People. Children enrolled are also welcome to bring in a pair of mittens or gloves to donate.

Basic Drawing Techniques

Monday
Parents and students have been asking for a class on basic drawing techniques, so here it is! Each week students will focus on a series of technical drawing exercises that will introduce basic drawing concepts dealing with line qualities, motion, and development into shape and form. Lessons will include instruction on shading and texturing, creative lettering, still life rendering, and aerial and linear perspective. Students will use a variety of drawing materials and will keep their own sketchbook throughout class. The cost of a sketchbook is included in the class fee and will be provided for students on the first day of class. We have split the class into specific age groups for the maximum benefit of the students. Each grade group will cover the same basic concepts, but projects and techniques will be developed to be age appropriate. There is also a grade 6-9 offering in the Tween section of the brochure.

This class, taught by an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist, is designed for the student who loves to explore nature. We will be making close studies of plants, animals, and insects as we use guide books to help us make correct identifications. On walks around the Art Center we will enjoy outdoor activities that will sharpen our observational skills. The children will be creating a nature journal by drawing, by painting with watercolors and by writing about their observations of nature. Along the way we will be reading nature-related literature, including poetry and listening to bird songs and nature-inspired classical music. A Nature Journal sketchbook and art supplies will be provided. Please bring a shoebox with lid to the first class.

Art Fundamentals for Homeschool Students: Art of the Americas

Information on many cultures is recorded through art. In this class, we will focus our study on the Americas. Each lesson will explore one of the following cultures: Inuit Indians of Canada, Navajo Native Americans of the United States, Huichol Indians of Mexico, Taino Indians of Haiti, and the Natives of Peru. We will touch on some history as well as examine a specific folk art or craft of each culture. Students will create a project of their own that will reflect what they have learned. Projects include mask making, printmaking, yarn painting, and ceramic coil pottery.

Musikgarten music and movement curriculum for parents and children is directed toward an aural development of the child through activities designed to nurture a loving musical bond between parent and child.  Families will be encouraged to actively make music together in their homes.  Because Musikgarten is an aural music education curriculum, the purchase of materials allows the child and parent to listen at home to the music used in class and is a necessary part of the program.  Attire for all Musikgarten classes:  comfortable clothes for moving.  Parents and children will be sitting on the floor. No toys, food or drink in the classroom.  Only students enrolled in class will be permitted in the Musikgarten class.

Musikgarten Family Music for Babies nurtures a bond of love and security between parent and child, increases a child's curiosity about music and develops a child's listening skills and sense of flow and beat through movement. The babies and their parents create a community of music makers. The teacher plays the role of coach as parents learn ways to play musically with their babies in arms. Raku and You (Making and Firing Raku Pottery)

Students will learn about traditional Japanese Raku pottery and the cha-no-yu Japanese tea ceremony as well as contempary Raku ceramic artists such as Paul Soldner. Students will also learn to create their own Japanese tea bowls and rice bowls using traditional Japanese wheel throwing techniques including throwing off the hump and Japanese throwing sticks. Perhaps the most thrilling aspect of Raku is participating in the process of firing your own pots. During the final class students will glaze and fire their ware using special Raku glazes and firing methods. The Raku firing process is completed in about one hour, so when you leave you will be able to take your finished pottery with you.

It's the Pits (Making and Firing Pots in the Pre-Columbian Tradition)

Students will create coil pottery in the tradition of the Pre-Columbian cultures such as the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayas and Pueblo Pottery in the tradition of Native American Indian cultures such as the Anasazi, Acoma, Zuni, and Hopi. Students will form and decorate their wares utilizing traditional techniques such as coiling, paddling, burnishing, incising and carving, stamping and impressing, and polychrome painting. Traditional tools that may be brought with you include a flat board or paddle to help shape the coil pots (this may be wrapped with rope to add texture to the surface), shells for smoothing and scraping, smooth stones for burnishing and a bowl or dish to be used as the 'puka' to form the pottery in. During the final class students will participate in a traditional pit firing similar to that used to thousands of years by primitive cultures all over the world.

Why not create something unique and decorative to serve your Thanksgiving turkey on this year? This wheel throwing class is designed for students with any level of skill or experience. Students will create a variety of wheel thrown plates from small pie plates to dinner plates and larger serving platters. Students will also learn to throw a vegetable tray with a center cup for veggie dips using the double wall throwing method. Traditional slip decorating techniques will also be demonstrated so that you can add color, pattern, and design to your creations. Class cost includes 30 lbs of clay (a $37.50 value). Additional clay is available at the front desk for $1.25 a pound.

Decorating techniques including sgraffito, banding, combing, underglazing, slip decorating, and glaze application will also be learned. Students will explore the history of pottery making around the world and apply what they learn about ancient and contemporary forming and decorating techniques in their own creative work. In this unusual drawing class we will be using several techniques (including music) to help you tap into that mysterious part of your brain that artists use to create. We will recreate the photos into a lovely painting that will look nice hanging in your home or that you can give as a gift. You will need brushes, canvases and paints (I prefer that you use water based oil paints). Don't forget your pictures!

Nature Journaling Workshop

Learn ways to create a nature journal for your observations of life in your own backyard as well as on your other journeys through the great outdoors. We will touch on the history of nature journals and the increased relevance of this practice during our present time of climate change. On a walk in the Art Center neighborhood we will make close observations of plants, animals, insects, weather, and other natural elements. We will then return to the classroom and begin to work on recording what we have seen through writing and/or drawing in the first pages of a nature journal. Please bring a spiral-bound 9x6 inch, plain watercolor paper sketch diary and your favorite drawing pencils, pens, and watercolors if desired. Some art supplies will be available in class.

In this class Dot Blum, a nationally accredited master judge with National Garden Clubs, will guide you in creating beautiful fall arrangements to use in your home or to give as gifts. Students will create a fresh fall floral arrangement (please bring a container : bowl, vase, or pitcher, in which you would like to place your arrangement), a lasting Thanksgiving centerpiece (combination of dried and silk flowers), and a Holiday wreath (using evergreens branches, pine cones, and other lasting plant materials). The cost of class includes fresh flowers as well as the dried and silk flowers and other lasting plant materials (approx. $18.00 value).

This wonderfully entertaining version of the classic tale is guaranteed to delight young audiences. When Hansel and Gretel are sent into the woods, they encounter some marvelous folk : an arrogant troll, a talking owl, a forest sprite and two hobgoblins in the service of the nasty (and hilarious) witch. Tremble for Hansel as he's locked in a cage and fed nothing but fudge and cake. Cheer for Gretel as she outwits the witch and sets free all the lost children who have been turned into cookies!

In the jazz portion of class, students will learn jazz technique, which incorporates contemporary movements that are fun and energetic. This class is designed for the adult student who has no formal ballet training or who has studied ballet in the past and wishes to resume training. Emphasis will be on correct placement, body alignment, toning and stretching. The class will advance at the pace appropriate to the developing skills of the students. Students are not expected to wear leotards and tights, but should wear clothes that are suitable for movement that fit appropriately so that the instructor can see posture and the lines of the body.

Classical Ballet Faculty:  Brenda Klingbeil Schwinn, Tricia Jenkins Meyer

Class placement is assigned by the faculty.  There are seven assigned levels:  Advanced Beginner, Intermediate I, II, III, IV and Advanced A & B.  Class placement is assigned by the Classical Ballet Faculty.  Students new to the school must arrange to attend an audition class by contacting the Front Desk. 

Wayne Center Ballet is the resident company of the school, providing the community with quality dance performances and performing experience for its dancers who are chosen by audition. The repertoire includes annual spring performances (dates to be announced) as well as a full-length Nutcracker in even numbered years.
