These workshops focus on basic elements of reading and writing poetry. Join us for accessible instruction about poetic devices and writing techniques.
A. January 28 - Building Poems from the Ground Up – explore line, music, title, and imagery. The workshop includes sample poem discussion and writing exercises designed for beginning and intermediate writers with a heart for learning.
B. February 25 - Family Portraits – bring along a photo of a member of your family and create a poem based on that photo. Emphasis will be placed on selecting effective words and images.
C. March 24 - Home Poetry – This workshop includes a discussion of the beauty of everyday objects and events, poems that capture such items, and writing exercises that allow participants to create their own poems.
D. April 28 - Neighborhood Poetry – This workshop focuses on imagery and includes a walk around the Arts Center neighborhood and opportunities for participants to write their own poems based on places or people they observe.
E. May 19 - Community Anthology – The poetry workshop series culminates with this workshop, during which participants will learn about the art of assembling a collection of poems. Collectively, we will meaningfully arrange selected pieces by workshop participants and select a title for the collection. If participants would like, we will plan an evening for a reading from the anthology.

Our pottery coordinator, Matt Menuez, would like to introduce you to the creative versatility of clay. Matt will show you around the pottery studio and let you try your hand at age appropriate clay techniques. He will answer any questions you might have about our pottery classes as well as explain the policies and procedures of the pottery studio. If you would like to create pieces that you can keep, you are welcome to purchase clay at the desk for $1.50 a pound and Matt will walk you through the entire process from creating the piece to explaining how the firing and glazing process will work so that you can pick up your piece later.

All tap, jazz, and musical theatre students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a Valentine’s weekend performance in the Wayne Center for the Arts Auditorium. Students will be rehearsing for this performance during class time. Students must attend a dress rehearsal Friday, February 10. Participation fee (which defrays the costs associated with the performance) of $20 is due by January 7.
Because students began rehearsing for the February performance during the fall session, only students who attended the fall session may register for the winter session class. New students will be able to join tap and jazz classes in the spring session.
Pre-Tap/Jazz Combo

In the tap portion of class, young children will learn the basics of tap including toe taps, heel taps, shuffles, cramp rolls and more. This fun introduction to tap is great for energetic preschoolers. Girls should wear a black leotard, black tights, and tap shoes. Boys should wear athletic shorts, t-shirts, socks, and tap shoes. In the jazz portion of class, students will learn jazz technique, which incorporates contemporary movements that are fun and energetic. Students will remove their tap shoes and dance in bare feet or ballet shoes. Please read the above information on the February 11th performance. Because students began rehearsing for the February performance during the fall session, only students who attended the fall session may register for the winter session class. New students will be able to join pre-tap classes in the spring session which will begin March 2.

Elementary I Tap/Jazz Combo

Young dancers will learn rhythm and timing as they develop their tap skills. Girls should wear a black leotard, black tights, and tap shoes. In the jazz portion or class, students will learn jazz technique, which incorporates contemporary movements that are fun and energetic. These Ballet level classes stress the basic vocabulary and technique of Classical Ballet. For students wishing to go on to more advanced Ballet studies, elementary classes are an excellent preparation. Levels are assigned by the instructor based on attendance and demonstrated readiness for the requirements of the curriculum. Note: Depending on their age, these very young dancers may remain in the Intermediate and Accelerated Levels for more than two semesters to acquire a higher level of competency before advancing to more challenging work.
Dance Attire for all Pre-Ballet and Elementary Ballet Classes:

Introductory Level
This class is for older students with no previous ballet experience and younger students who have taken pre-ballet or continuing pre-ballet and the instructor feels a session in the introductory level would be beneficial for a smooth transition into the elementary ballet program. After this class, the instructor will place students in the appropriate level to continue.

Emphasis will be on correct placement, body alignment, toning and stretching. The class will advance at the pace appropriate to the developing skills of the students. Students are not expected to wear leotards and tights, but should wear clothes that are suitable for movement that fit appropriately so that the instructor can see posture and the lines of the body.

There are six assigned levels: Advanced Beginner, Intermediate I, II, III, IV and Advanced Level. Class placement is assigned by the Classical Ballet Faculty. Students new to the school must arrange to attend an audition class by contacting the Front Desk.
Wayne Center Ballet is the resident company of the school, providing the community with quality dance performances and performing experience for its dancers who are chosen by audition. The repertoire includes a spring performance (April 21 & 22) as well as a full-length Nutcracker in even numbered years.
