MISSION STATEMENT:  The Wayne Center for the Arts Children’s Chorus, in partnership with Tri-County Educational Service Center, provides a progressive choral music experience dedicated to the achievement of excellence in choral expression for children with treble voices.

GOALS:

¨           To develop musicianship

¨           To develop music literacy

¨           To develop correct and beautiful singing

¨           To develop sophisticated performance skills

¨           To develop intelligent rehearsal habits

¨           To enhance social development through music

The 2011-2012 choir year starts 0n August 29th in the evening with a “sing-in” where each student will learn some singing fundamentals through warm-ups, musical games, and singing activities plus get to know the other choir members!  Children’s Chorus will begin meeting regularly in September on Monday evenings (first rehearsal on Monday, September19th).

Throughout the choral year (September through early May) we work on several types of music including spirituals, classical, folk songs, sacred and many others.  In the past, the choirs have performed for several service organizations but the primary focus is on two main performances for the year (Holiday Concert, Spring Concert).

If you have any further questions, please contact the Wayne Center for the Arts at  (330) 264-2787.

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE

The Children’s Chorus will rehearse on Monday evenings.  The Cantáre and Cantabile Choirs rehearse from 6:15 – 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Wooster.  The Bel Canto Choir rehearses from 6:00 – 7:45 p.m. at Wayne Center for the Arts.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY

All singers are required to bring their folder to each rehearsal along with a pencil.  If music is lost or stolen, the student is responsible for replacement ($1.50 per piece or $20.00 for the entire folder).  Each chorister may receive a practice tape if deemed necessary by the director to use at home for review between regular rehearsals.  All music will be memorized before each performance.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITY

It is necessary for the parent(s) of a chorister to secure dependable transportation to and from rehearsals and performances.  Several of the parents participate in a car pool.  Parents may volunteer to assist with various aspects of the running of the Choruses (e.g. ticket sales, ushering, putting up posters, helping with refreshments after a concert, etc.)  You may be asked to help out at some time with these tasks.

PERFORMANCE ATTIRE

Boys:
White long sleeve oxford shirt, black trousers, bblack socks & shoes

Girls:

White long sleeve oxford shirt, black mid-knee length skirt, black tights & shoes

A tie and vest will be provided for each Bel Canto member.  Cantabile members receive a tie and cummerbund, while Cantáre singers will get a tie and set of suspenders.  All outfit items provided by the Children’s Chorus remain the property of the Children’s Chorus and must be returned at the end of the concert season.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
An attendance policy allows for two (2) absences per semester.  After two (2) absences, the chorus member will be placed on probation.  After the third absence, the member may be notified that they must attend a make-up rehearsal to cover the material missed.  If you must miss a rehearsal for any reason, the choir manager should receive a written note at the next regularly scheduled rehearsal.  Participation in the Children’s Chorus is a regular, weekly commitment.

Please note the lack of policies regarding unexcused or excused absences.  Rehearsal time is very scarce and cannot be made up.  This is not to say that an occasional absence due to illness or a conflict with a previously scheduled school or family activity will not be understood.  But that time can never be made up.  In a group of this type, it is impossible to make that time up on an individual basis.  You are either there, or you are not.  For each choir to be the best it can be, every member must attend every rehearsal!

CONCERTS AND PERFORMANCES

A full calendar is given for each season with dates and times of rehearsals, and performances.  It is the responsibility of each chorister’s family to note these dates to avoid unnecessary conflicts.  The Children’s Chorus will perform two annual concerts: A Holiday Concert and a Spring Concert.  Other performances or appearances will be scheduled through the directors and general manager.  Previous additional choral performances have included the lighting of the Children’s Christmas Tree in Wooster, Christmas Carol Singing on the Square, Wooster Ethnic Fair, Classical Concert performance with the Canton Symphony Orchestra, an appearance with the Wayne Center for the Arts Ballet production of “Hansel and Gretel”, and a trip to Cleveland to perform at the Ohio Music Education Association Professional Conference.

CONCERT ATTENDANCE

Performance attendance is required of all chorus members.  Before each major concert, a required dress rehearsal will be scheduled in the performance hall.  It is NOT necessary to wear concert attire for the dress rehearsal.  All choristers must be in attendance at this rehearsal in order to participate in the concert.
